The sun off my pool creates blinding glare in my living room. Any way to reduce it?

Short answer

Still water behaves almost like a mirror when the sun sits low, and the beam it throws travels upward. Coming from below the horizontal, it passes under eaves, awnings and top-down shades and hits you in the face. The three places to work on are the water surface, the decking, and the glass.

Pool glare in the living room is a different animal from ordinary window glare, and homeowners usually work that out the expensive way. The patio cover goes up, the awning goes on, the top-down shades get fitted, and at half past six the room is exactly as blinding as it was before.

Nothing was installed wrong. All of those products assume light arrives from above, because for most of the day it does. Light reflected off a swimming pool does not. It comes up off the surface at a shallow angle and travels underneath everything built to stop the sun.

Once you know that, the list of things worth trying changes completely, and several of them cost nothing. Some are at the water, some are on the deck around it, and one is at the window.

Why does pool glare in the living room get under the patio overhang?

Water is an unusually good mirror when you look across it rather than down into it. Face on, from above, most of the light goes into the pool and you see the bottom. As the angle between the light and the surface gets shallower, the share that bounces off instead of entering climbs steeply, and near grazing angles a still pool reflects most of what hits it.

A late-afternoon sun is exactly that shallow case. So the pool is not glowing. It is reflecting, and it reflects the way a mirror does: the beam leaves the surface at the same angle it arrived, but on the other side, which means it is heading upward.

That upward path is the whole story of this page:

  • An eave, an awning or a pergola intercepts light coming down. Reflected pool light is coming up, and it slides under all of them.
  • A top-down shade closes off the upper part of a window, which is the correct move for direct sun and the wrong one here. The light is entering the lower half of the glass.
  • Ripples do not remove the reflection. They tilt small pieces of the surface in many directions at once, which is why the reflection breaks into a moving, shimmering band that is arguably harder on the eyes than a single steady patch.

It also explains why the problem seems to switch on and off. A pool with the cleaner running or a breeze across it throws light differently from a pool that has been sitting still for an hour.

When is it worst, and can I predict it?

Yes, and predicting it is genuinely useful, because it tells you how much of the year you are solving for and whether a fixed or a seasonal answer makes sense.

Three factors set the timing:

  • Sun height. The reflection is strongest when the sun is low, so the bad window is the last hour or two before sunset, plus the first hour after sunrise for east-facing rooms with the pool on that side.
  • Alignment. The pool has to sit between the low sun and your window for the mirrored path to reach you. That is a narrow geometry, which is why the glare often shows up as a defined season rather than year-round.
  • Sun azimuth through the year. Sunset moves along the horizon with the seasons, swinging north of due west in midsummer and back south of it in winter. A pool that has never bothered the living room can start doing so in June, and a house that suffers in October may be fine in July.

Spend a week noting the times. If the whole problem lives inside forty minutes on summer evenings, a pool cover pulled at six or a bottom-up shade is proportionate, and film may be more than you need. If it runs for two hours across half the year, and the room is hot as well, treating the glass starts making sense as a permanent answer rather than a daily chore.

Does the color of the pool interior change anything?

It changes part of the problem and not the part most people expect, so this is worth getting right before anyone resurfaces a pool over it.

There are two separate brightnesses coming off a pool:

  • The surface reflection. Light that never enters the water. This is what produces the hard, blinding, mirror-like flash, and it is governed by the angle of the sun and the smoothness of the surface. The color of the plaster underneath makes very little difference to it, because that light never got down there.
  • The return from the interior. Light that enters, travels through the water, hits the finish and comes back up. A white or pale blue plaster returns a lot of it and gives the pool that bright, luminous look. A dark gray, charcoal or black pebble finish absorbs much more and returns far less.

So a dark interior genuinely reduces the broad, all-day glow off the water and makes the pool read as calm and reflective of the sky. It will not stop the low-sun flash, because that is a surface effect. Anyone who tells you a color change will fix evening glare has skipped the physics.

Two side effects to weigh honestly. Dark finishes absorb more solar energy, so the water tends to run warmer, which some owners want in April and nobody wants in August. And a dark, still surface acts more like a mirror of the sky and surroundings, which can be beautiful and can also put a clear image of a bright cloud straight into your window.

What about the decking and the coping around the pool?

The deck is frequently the second half of the complaint and the half nobody looks at. Concrete, travertine and light-coloured pavers sit in full sun for hours and scatter light in every direction, including into the house. It is not a hard mirror flash, so it does not announce itself. It just makes everything on that side of the room bright and hard to look toward.

What actually helps:

  • Go darker or more textured with the surface. Broom-finished, textured or mid-toned decking scatters less light back at eye level than a pale, smooth slab. This is a decision for a resurfacing project rather than a reason to start one.
  • Watch the sealer. A high-gloss sealer on concrete or travertine turns a diffuse surface into a partly specular one, and gloss sealers on a west-facing deck can make a room noticeably worse than it was. Matte and penetrating sealers avoid that entirely, and they cost about the same.
  • Break up the run. Planting beds, rugs on the patio, low furniture and a strip of turf between the deck and the house all reduce the uninterrupted bright plane you are looking across.
  • Look at what else is out there. Glass patio tables, stainless outdoor kitchens, chrome furniture frames and white composite railings are all small, well-aimed reflectors. Moving or covering one of them sometimes solves a complaint that had been blamed entirely on the water.

Do landscaping, pool covers and water movement help?

Each of these attacks the problem before it reaches the glass, and two of them are free.

Planting on the far side. The useful position is not between the pool and the house. It is on the opposite side of the water, where a hedge, a fence panel or a tree canopy intercepts the low sun before it ever strikes the surface. Anything tall enough to break the shallow beam does the job, which is why a fence or a row of upright shrubs can outperform a large shade tree that is planted in the wrong place. The Arbor Day Foundation notes an additional side benefit worth taking: shading the air conditioning condenser itself can cut that unit's electricity use by up to 10%.

A pool cover. A solid or solar cover pulled over the water for the worst stretch of the evening removes the reflecting surface entirely. It is the most complete fix available and it is also a chore, so it suits households whose difficulty is short and predictable.

Water movement. Running a fountain, a spillover or the return jets keeps the surface broken. This does not reduce the total light reflected, and it can make the glare more diffuse and less like a single blinding disc. Some people find that easier to live with. Others find the shimmer worse. Try it before assuming.

Rearranging the room. A chair turned ninety degrees, or a seating group moved four feet along a wall, takes your eyes out of the reflected path. It is worth ten minutes of experimenting before spending anything.

What can be done at the window itself?

If the timing survey said the problem is long, repeated and paired with an overheated room, the glass is the right place to spend money. Two products handle it differently.

Window film. It reduces light across the whole pane, so it works on light entering low just as well as light entering high, which is precisely where shades and overhangs fail. For a room facing water, 3M's Night Vision Series is the range built for this compromise. 3M's product page lists 15% to 35% visible light transmission and heat rejection of up to 71%, with deliberately low interior reflectivity. That last property matters a lot beside a pool: a mirror-finish film would hand you a reflection of your own lamps across the window every evening, and would make it harder to keep an eye on the water after dark.

Bottom-up shades. The inverse of the usual arrangement, covering the lower half of the window and leaving the top open. For reflected pool light this is the correct orientation, and it preserves sky and treeline while blocking the beam coming off the water. Combined with a lighter film it lets you keep the room usable without going dark.

Whatever is quoted, ask for the interior reflectance figure alongside the visible light transmission, and have the installer confirm the glass is suitable. Thermal stress tolerance varies widely between annealed, tempered and heat-strengthened glass, and a large single-pane patio window facing a pool is exactly the assembly worth checking rather than assuming.

What this looks like in Dallas–Fort Worth

  • NWS Fort Worth logged 23 days at or above 100°F at DFW Airport in 2024. Backyard use peaks in exactly those weeks, which is also when the low evening sun and a still pool line up most often.
  • The longest run of 100°F days on record here is 42 consecutive days, from June 23 to August 3, 1980, according to NWS Fort Worth. Anyone treating a pool-facing room as a seasonal nuisance should plan for the long version of a North Texas summer.
  • ERCOT's all-time summer peak demand of 85,508 MW came on August 10, 2023, late in the day. The hours a west-facing pool room is at its most uncomfortable are the same hours the grid is working hardest, which is a fair argument for cutting the heat at the glass rather than at the thermostat.
  • Pools sit close to the house on many Arlington and south Arlington lots, so the water is often only a few strides from a large patio slider. A short distance between water and glass leaves less room for planting or screening to do the work, and puts more weight on what happens at the window.

Questions people ask next

Will window film get rid of the reflection off the water completely?

No. Film cuts the intensity of everything coming through the pane, so the reflected band becomes far less punishing, but it is still there. Removing it entirely means removing the reflecting surface, moving out of its path, or blocking the beam before it crosses the yard. Film is the right answer when you need the room usable rather than perfect.

Why did my new patio cover not help at all?

Because it was built to stop light arriving from above, and this light arrives from below. A low sun bouncing off a flat water surface travels upward at a shallow angle, passing underneath eaves, pergolas and awnings before it reaches the glass. Overhangs are excellent against direct midday sun and close to useless against reflected pool light.

Would resurfacing the pool in a darker finish solve the evening glare?

It would reduce the general glow off the water without touching the low-sun flash. Interior color affects light that enters the pool, travels down and comes back up. The blinding evening reflection never enters the water at all, it bounces off the top surface. A darker finish is a reasonable choice for other reasons, but not a fix for this.

Will a darker film make it hard to watch the pool from indoors?

That is the question to press an installer on, and the number that answers it is interior reflectivity rather than darkness alone. A highly reflective film turns the glass into a mirror once the outside is darker than the room. 3M's Night Vision Series is built with low interior reflectivity so the view outward, including toward the water, survives after dark.

Does the same treatment help with the heat from that side of the house?

Usually, yes, and for a room with a large pool-facing slider the heat is often the bigger annual cost. 3M lists heat rejection of up to 71% for the Night Vision Series. Because film works on the whole pane, it deals with the low evening sun and the high afternoon sun in the same installation.

Is there any risk to putting film on a large patio slider?

There is a risk worth assessing rather than ignoring, and it belongs to the glass, not the film. Glass types tolerate very different temperature differentials, with annealed glass far more sensitive than tempered or heat-strengthened. A competent installer checks type, thickness, pane size and frame before recommending a product, and 3M backs correctly applied film with a glass breakage warranty of up to 5 years and $1,500 per window.
