My hardwood floors are fading in a stripe where the sun hits. Can I stop it?

Short answer

Usually the stripe is the wood that didn't change. Cherry darkens in light, oak and maple lighten, and the covered area stays where it started. You can't reverse that divergence without refinishing, but blocking UV at the glass slows further change. No window film stops fading completely.

You moved a rug or a console table, and there it is: a hard line across the boards, one side a different shade than the other. Most people call it hardwood floors fading from sun exposure, and the sun is certainly responsible. The line itself, though, is usually telling you the opposite of what it looks like.

Wood does not change in one direction. Depending on the species, light drives the color darker or lighter. The strip under the rug did not change at all. It is the original floor. Everything around it moved.

That distinction decides what you can actually do. You cannot un-expose the wood that shifted, and you cannot re-expose the covered strip quickly or evenly. What you can do is slow the divergence from here, and then decide whether to let the covered patch catch up or sand the whole floor and start clean.

Why does the line show up exactly where the rug was?

Start by comparing the two sides. If the covered strip is lighter than the open floor, your wood darkened in the light. If the covered strip is darker, the exposed wood lightened. Either way, the covered wood is your control sample. It is what the whole floor looked like on installation day.

So the job is not restoring a faded stripe. There is no faded stripe. There is a floor that moved and a rectangle that did not.

Two things are happening in the boards at once. The wood's own extractives photo-oxidize, which shifts the natural color of the species. Separately, the finish sitting on top can amber or yellow on its own schedule. Those two changes sometimes push the same way and sometimes cancel each other out, which is why two floors of the same species can look nothing alike after five years in similar rooms.

Temperature matters less here than people assume. Color change tracks light dose: how bright, for how many hours, across how many years. A cooler-than-usual summer buys the floor nothing if the sun still crosses the same window at the same hour every afternoon.

Will my floor go darker or lighter?

Species behave differently, and some behave in opposite directions:

  • American cherry and Brazilian cherry (jatoba) darken and deepen with light. On cherry the shift moves quickly in the first months and is usually considered desirable, which is exactly why a rug left down for a year leaves an obvious pale ghost.
  • Red oak, white oak and maple tend to go lighter and flatter, often losing some of the warmth a stain gave them when new.
  • Stained floors of any species add a third variable, because the stain is a pigment or dye sitting in the top of the grain and it can shift on its own timeline, independently of the wood beneath it.

If you are not sure what you have, find a patch that has been covered since day one. Under a floor register, inside a closet, behind the toe kick of an island, beneath a heavy appliance. Slide something out and compare. That one comparison tells you the direction of travel and roughly how far the floor has already gone.

Knowing the direction changes your plan. A darkening floor will eventually close the gap on its own if you uncover the pale area and wait. A lightening floor will not go back the other way, so waiting only widens the difference.

How much does the finish have to do with it?

Quite a lot, and it is worth knowing which one you have before you spend anything.

  • Oil-modified polyurethane is the classic site-applied finish. It ambers with age into a warm, golden tone, and light accelerates that. On a white oak floor the ambering can read as the whole room going yellow while the sunlit path goes pale, two changes at once.
  • Water-based polyurethane stays far closer to clear over time and ambers much less. It does not hide what the wood underneath is doing, though, so species behavior shows through more plainly.
  • Penetrating hardwax oils have no surface film to yellow, and they can be spot-repaired in place, which is genuinely useful in a sun path. They need periodic re-oiling to stay protected.
  • Factory UV-cured finishes with aluminum oxide, standard on prefinished and engineered flooring, are extremely abrasion resistant and cured under UV lamps in the plant. Cured by UV is not the same as filtering UV. Some of these coatings include UV absorbers or inhibitors and some do not.

Call your flooring manufacturer with the product name and ask a direct question: does this finish contain a UV inhibitor, and what does that actually protect against? Ask them to point you to it in writing. If a supplier cannot answer, treat the finish as wear protection only and plan the light side of the problem separately.

Can I fix the line that's already in the floor?

There are three honest routes, and they are not equal.

Let it even out. Uncover the pale area and give it time. This only works on species that keep changing in the same direction, cherry being the obvious case. Expect months rather than weeks, and expect the boundary to soften into a gradient rather than disappear cleanly. Some floors close the gap so well you forget where it was. Others hold a faint edge forever.

Sand and refinish. This is the only reliable reset. Do the whole room, not the stripe. A spot refinish almost always shows, because sheen, color and finish age never match at the seam. Costs vary by square footage, species and how many coats you want, so get two or three quotes rather than trusting an online average. One scheduling note: address the light coming through the window first, then refinish. Refinishing into an untreated sun path just restarts the clock on the same problem.

Replace boards. Usually the worst-looking option unless the wood is actually damaged. New boards come in at the original color and then start diverging from their neighbors on their own schedule, so you trade one visible line for a patch that keeps moving.

If your floor is engineered, ask how thick the wear layer is before committing to a sanding. That layer sets how many times the floor can be refinished at all, and it is a finite budget.

What can I do about the light without touching the windows?

Several things, and a couple of them are free.

Rotate what sits on the floor. Put rugs, plant stands and furniture on a rotation you actually keep, quarterly is a reasonable rhythm. This does not slow the overall color change, but it prevents the hard-edged lines that bother people most. Nothing in a sun path should sit untouched for a year.

Use the shades you already have. Closing blinds during the hours the beam is on the floor works, with the obvious catch that it only works when someone does it, and it costs you the daylight and the view for those hours. Motorized shades on a schedule solve the discipline problem at a real price.

Exterior solar screens stop solar energy on the outside of the glass, before it enters the room at all. HomeGuide puts them at $50 to $150 per window installed in 2026, with quantity discounts of roughly 10 to 25 percent on a whole-house order. They change how the house looks from the street and they visibly soften the view out, which some households mind and others do not notice after a week.

Shade trees are the long game. The Arbor Day Foundation reports that large deciduous trees on the east, west and northwest sides can cut summer air conditioning costs by up to 35 percent, and a deciduous canopy drops its leaves in winter when you want the sun back. It takes years to get there, so plant now and solve the floor another way in the meantime.

Where does window film fit for hardwood floors fading from sun?

Film goes on the glass you already own, and it works on everything inside the room at once: the floor, the sofa sitting in the same beam, the art on the far wall.

On the specifics, 3M's own technical data sheet for the Prestige Series gives a minimum UV rejection figure of 99.9%, with visible light transmission options spanning 21% at the darkest to 69% at the lightest. That range is the important part for a floor you want to keep looking at, because it means you can hold most of the daylight and still take the ultraviolet out. The film carries no metal layer, so it is not reflective in the old mirrored-glass sense.

Now the limit, stated plainly. The International Window Film Association's FAQ is explicit on both counts: film can cut ultraviolet's share of fading by as much as 99%, and no window film can eliminate fading. Visible light and solar heat keep working on wood and finish after the UV is gone. Film slows the rate of change. It does not stop the clock, and it does nothing at all for the line already in your floor.

One practical step before installation: the installer should look at your glass first — type, thickness, pane size, frame — since different glass types tolerate very different temperature differentials. That assessment is standard practice and it is not optional.

What this looks like in Dallas–Fort Worth

  • DFW gets roughly 135 clear days plus 97 partly sunny days a year, about 232 days with meaningful sun, according to Current Results' compilation of NOAA climate data. A sunlit floor is accumulating exposure on most days of the year, not just in summer.
  • 2025 was unusually mild in North Texas. NWS Fort Worth's 100-degree day records show only about six or seven such days at DFW Airport all summer. Floors kept changing anyway, because color shift follows light, not air temperature.
  • In a west-facing Arlington living room, the late-afternoon sun comes in low and reaches far across the floor, so the affected area is much larger than the window. South-facing rooms see the reverse: a short high patch in July and a much deeper one in December.
  • If your Arlington home still has its original single-pane windows, that room is taking the full dose, and it is also the room where a refinish will get undone fastest if you do not change something at the glass.

Questions people ask next

If the covered strip is the original color, should I just leave rugs everywhere?

That preserves the color under the rug and does nothing for the rest, so you end up with more lines, not fewer. Rugs are fine. Leaving them in exactly the same position for years is what creates the hard edge. Rotate them a few times a year and the boundaries blur instead of setting.

Can a floor that lightened be brought back without sanding?

Not reliably. Wood that has lost color in the light does not walk it back when you cover it up. Tinted maintenance coats and cleaners are sometimes sold for this, but they sit on the surface and rarely match across a whole room. If the difference bothers you, sanding and refinishing is the honest answer.

Will window film change how the daylight looks in the room?

It depends which film. The Prestige line spans 21% to 69% visible light transmission, so a lighter option keeps most of the daylight while a darker one dims the room noticeably. Because there is no metal layer in the construction, it avoids the mirrored appearance older metallized films were known for. Look at options side by side on your own window before choosing.

Does putting film on my windows void the window warranty?

Policies vary by window manufacturer, so ask yours directly and get the answer in writing. What you can count on is the backstop 3M publishes in its own warranty bulletin: a seal-failure warranty that matches your window's original seal term for as long as 10 years, capped at $1,500 per window including labor. That exists precisely because the question comes up.

Is engineered hardwood less prone to this than solid wood?

No. The top layer is the same species with the same finish, so it changes color the same way. The difference shows up in repair. An engineered board has a thinner wear layer than solid wood, which limits how many times the floor can be sanded. Find out your wear layer thickness before planning a refinish.

Does film really pay for itself here, or am I just delaying a refinish?

You are slowing the rate of change, not preventing a refinish forever. Whether that math works depends on your floor. A whole-house refinish is a serious line item and film costs a fraction of it, so if you refinish and then leave the same window untreated, you are buying the same job again sooner than you would like.
